East Finchley

Community Trust

Brag Sheet

East Finchley Community Trust (EFCT) was established in September 2010 to support the substantial amount of voluntary activity in the area undertaken by a wide range of community organisations.

The idea of forming a Trust arose from discussions among local people and groups about having the ability in our local area to effect change in East Finchley and especially change, whether social, economic or environmental that would benefit local people and businesses within our area of benefit.

East Finchley Community has been set up as a charitable company and:

“is established for the public benefit within the area of Finchley and surrounding area within the London Borough of Barnet with the following objects:-

The promotion for the benefit of the public of urban regeneration in areas of social and economic deprivation and in particular in Finchley by all or any of the following means:

(a)   the relief of financial hardship;

(b)   the advancement of education, training or retraining, particularly among unemployed people, and providing unemployed people with work experience;

(c)    the maintenance, improvement or provision of public amenities and community development;

(d)   the provision of recreational facilities or other leisure time occupation for the public at large or those who by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances, have need of such facilities;

(e)   the protection or conservation  of the environment;

(f)     the promotion of public safety and prevention of crime;

(g)   such other means as may from time to time be determined subject to the prior written consent of the Charity Commissioners for England and Wales.”

In addition we have developed a ‘vision’ for East Finchley as a clear guide to the type of activity we aim to get involved with and which helps guide our decisions in making priorities.

Our vision is: “The East Finchley Community Trust aims to make East Finchley a better place for all its residents.  It will do this by building on the community spirit that already exists to achieve long-term improvements.   It hopes to contribute towards better local facilities, better local services, an improved environment, and a sustained regeneration of the local economy.   It will work with all residents and will ensure that the benefits it achieves are for the community as a whole.

It will realise this vision by:

  • Consulting residents to find out real needs and aspirations.
  • Being open and accountable to the whole community.
  • Attracting money into East Finchley for community development
  • Undertaking community projects.
  • Supporting other groups wanting to make improvements in the area – in particular, to help them with funding.
  • Creating community assets so that the future and independence of the Trust is secured.
  • Working in partnership with the voluntary, private and public sectors.”

What have we done?

The focus of our work is within East Finchley where projects undertaken include responsibility for the East Finchley Community Festival and this forms the key focus of much our activity. This successful annual one day community festival has been running for over 30 years. In the past few years the Festival has attracted nearly 10,000 visitors to Cherry Tree Wood although 2012 proved to be a washout because of the flooding in the park.

On 8th December 2012 we held the first East Finchley Christmas Festival on the High Road which involved local bands playing, stalls, local community groups preforming and much more. We aim to repeat this event in 2013. With the money raised at this event we were able to share a total of £1500 between three local charities, Nazareth House, the Bobath Centre and Home-Start Barnet.

We work with and help facilitate a French/continental Market to operate over two weekends on East Finchley High Road. This has helped boost the number of shoppers in the high road and a number of existing retailers have taken advantage of this additional footfall to increase their own trade.

We have been successful in working with other local organisations to attract grant money into East Finchley. We worked closely with Martin Primary School and have been successful in obtaining a £10,000 lottery grant to develop resources for the school to help them celebrate their centenary of opening in 2013.

What next

The strength of the Trust is that we are embedded within the community that we aim to serve. Our Directors and volunteers are local, live in and look set to stay in East Finchley for many years to come. We remain a small organisation and aim to grow slowly over the coming years, maintaining the Festival and its traditions whilst seeking out opportunities to boost social cohesion and economic development in the area.
